LGBT and Straight Alliance at Selkirk

If you were wandering through the Pit on September 17th, you might have noticed all of the Selkirk College clubs had tables displayed with information about their programs.

You also may have noticed a rainbow flag above one of those tables. That’s the brand new Selkirk College Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual (LGBT), and Straight Alliance Club.

This club was founded in order to promote awareness of sexual diversity, create a place to connect with others, and to provide support to anybody, regardless of their sexuality.

Although most colleges and universities in Canada already have LGBT clubs, this is the very first club of its kind at Selkirk College.

The club has three executive members: Stephanie Markin, Daniel Ellis, and Dujung Lee (Dujung is also the club’s head representative), and currently has thirty-two members, making it one of Selkirk’s largest clubs.

The LGBT and Straight Alliance Club will have a meeting on the first Thursday of each month. At these meetings the club will plan an event which will take place at the end of that month. These events will provide an opportunity to connect with other people in the club and community and to simply have some fun.

The first event, which will be a movie night, will be held at the end of October. Several other proposed ideas are a sledding night, bowling, and a group trip to Ainsworth Hot Springs.

Meetings will take place on the Castlegar campus and everyone is welcome to attend. For further information about the club, please contact the executive members at selkriklgbt@gmail.com.
