Battle of the Arts

Jan 25, 2009 by

The Selkirk College Students’ Union (SCSU) will present the first annual “SCSU Battle of the Arts” event on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Legion Hall in Nelson BC. The event is open to audiences of all ages and will showcase the talents of Kootenay School of the Arts fine arts students as well as Selkirk College Music students. Doors will open at 9pm, at which time audiences will be invited to peruse and admire the displays of KSA students’ portfolio and studio artwork and crafts, some of which may be available for purchase. Concurrent to the KSA displays, there will be a musical “battle of the bands” competition, where the First Place band will be awarded a cash prize of $500.00.

“The music students are really excited about this event and we’ve had lots of interest from bands wanting to join the night’s line-up,” said Russell Haskins, SCSU Services Director.

The event will also feature a special raffle draw for two alpine lift tickets and one Nordic ski pass to Whitewater Ski Resort. Tickets for the draw will be available at the Legion for a cash or food bank donation. The draw is only available to Selkirk College students.

“The ski pass draw was really successful last year, so students are really looking forward to it again this year,” said Erin O’Neill, SCSU Nelson Campus Past Treasurer.

The Battle of the Arts is free for Selkirk College students with valid student ID, and is open to the public at a cost of $5.00 admission. Tickets will be available at the Legion, starting at 9pm and all proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of food for the SCSU student food banks.

All community members are invited to attend and share in a lively evening of artistic expression.
